TORONTO—Unifor’s Auto Council has decided that gaining investment in Canada’s automotive plants and winning new jobs are its top priorities as it heads into contract negotiations this summer with the Detroit Three automakers.
SPRING HILL, TN—General Motors is investing $790 million at its assembly plant here and another $118 million in Michigan. The company will create nearly 800 jobs at the Spring Hill plant as part of the new high-efficiency engine program and other modernization initiatives.
DETROIT—General Motors is turning its employees’ recycled water bottles into noise-reducing fabric insulation that covers the engine in the Chevrolet Equinox. The bottles—collected from five of its Michigan facilities—are also being turned into air filtration components and insulation for winter coats for the homeless.
SPRING HILL, TN—To support expansion of its assembly plant here, General Motors has begun accepting applications to populate its temporary hiring pool for future employment.

MORAINE, OH—GM and Isuzu are looking to hire 150 new workers for their joint-venture DMAX engine assembly plant here to meet increased demand for diesel truck engines.
DETROIT—Working with robotics manufacturer FANUC, networking giant Cisco, and hardware maker Rockwell Automation, GM has installed a “mother brain” at its Lake Orion assembly plant. The system accepts data flowing to and from robots, conveyors, temperature sensors and other devices and sends that information to a cloud network. That enables plant managers and supplier technicians to monitor assembly technology and prevent mishaps.
