DETROIT—General Motors is planning to invest approximately $1.6 billion in its North American manufacturing facilities during 2013, in a bid to unveil about 20 new models during the year.
ARLINGTON, TX—GM has hired 1,000 new workers to build large SUVs at its assembly plant here. The new jobs are part of a $500 million expansion that includes a new stamping facility set to open next year.
BOWLING GREEN, KY—GM’s Corvette assembly plant here is one of 54 facilities to meet a voluntary energy-reduction challenge set by the Environmental Protection Agency, cutting its energy intensity by 26 percent in less than one year.
CHANGWON, South Korea—GM will add a three-megawatt solar installation on the roof of its assembly plant here. The array will cut carbon emissions at the plant by 2,400 metric tons a year.
Traditionally, assemblers at General Motors installed Rivnut fasteners into vehicle bodies with a handheld power screwdriver. A new fastener handling system made the process more efficient.
