Fairfax, KS—General Motors (GM) recently announced plans to lay off 1,695 workers at its Fairfax Assembly plant in Kansas, as outlined in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice in mid-September.
A GM spokesperson confirmed the layoffs to Reuters, after this story was first reported by Automotive News.
The first phase will begin on November 18, with 686 full-time employees being temporarily laid off and 250 temporary workers losing their positions.
The second phase, starting on January 12 of next year, will see 759 full-time employees laid off temporarily.
In May, GM stated it would halt production of the Cadillac XT4 at the Kansas plant after January 2025, which would lead to further layoffs until production resumes later in the year for both the Chevrolet Bolt EV and Cadillac XT4, which will share the same assembly line.
"As announced in May, GM is investing approximately $390 million in our Fairfax Assembly Plant to support production of the new Chevrolet Bolt EV," the spokesperson said in an email to Reuters.
"To install new tooling, employees will be placed on temporary layoff until production resumes in mid-2025," they added.
Additionally, in August, GM laid off over 1,000 salaried employees globally across its software and services units.
