WASHINGTON—From Oct. 1, 2023, to Sept. 30, 2024, the National Labor Relations Board received 3,286 union election petitions, up 27 percent since FY 2023, when the agency received 2,593 petitions. This is more than double the number of petitions received since FY 2021, when the NLRB received 1,638 petitions.

SILAO, Mexico—Workers at two General Motors’ assembly plants here voted for a new independent union to represent them after ousting an old guard union last year, according to results announced Feb. 3.

GAINESVILLE, TX—Employees at the Zodiac Aerospace assembly plant here approved a new contract by an overwhelming margin Oct. 25, ending a month-long strike at the factory, which makes aircraft seating. The key issues of the contract dispute were work environment, seniority rights and work schedules.

WASHINGTON—Joyce D. Miller, who rose from an assembly line job to the top ranks of American labor as the first woman on the AFL-CIO executive council, died June 30 in Washington. She was 84.
