While studying for a master's degree in architecture at Delft University of Technology, Michiel Holthinrichs began to collect and repair vintage watches. He turned his passion into a business, founding Holthinrichs Watches in 2013.
DETROIT—Shinola Detroit LLC is opening a new watch dial factory here, allowing it to bring more manufacturing back to the city. Currently the luxury goods company, which is known for watches, bicycles and leather goods, purchases its dials from Taiwan-based BAT Ltd.

DETROIT—Last summer, watchmaker Shinola opened a new assemble plant here with just 14 employees. Today, the company has 25 workers and is planning to hire 10 more in the next few months.
In the late 19th century, Swiss craftsmen Jules Louis Audemars and Edward Auguste Piguet met at Vallee de Joux and started working together in watch manufacturing.
