Water heaters are one of the least glamorous types of home appliances. The vertical metal tanks typically sit out of sight in dark corners of basements or behind closet doors. Most homeowners never think about the devices—until there’s no hot water. 

GUELPH, Canada — Danby, a Canadian appliance manufacturer, is retooling its production lines to make full-service ventilators and a second device that allows bag valve masks to operate mechanically in an emergency situation.

Additive manufacturing has already transformed the way that products are designed and produced in a wide variety of industries. The technology is now starting to be used by appliance engineers to assemble coffee makers, ovens, refrigerators and other household products.

In June 2016,, General Electric sold its century-old appliances business to Chinese manufacturer Quingdao Haier Co. Ltd. for $5.4 billion. GE Appliance’s headquarters will remain in Louisville, KY, and the agreement calls for the business to continue to market the current portfolio of GE brands for at least 40 years.

NEW BERN, NC—BSH Home Appliance Corp. has reopened its dishwasher assembly plant here, after investing $50 million to upgrade the facility. The company has recalled 100 workers who were laid off for the renovation.

LAFAYETTE, GA—Roper Corp. is looking to fill about 100 production jobs at its assembly plant here, which makes kitchen stoves and microwaves.
