Most consumers make their selection based on a general perception of quality or value. The challenge for manufacturers, therefore, is to determine what is driving the consumer’s perception of value or quality. They must find a way to transform consumers’ qualitative demands into quantitative parameters that will shape the design of the product and, ultimately, the manufacturing process.
Quality function deployment (QFD) is a process and set of tools to do just that. QFD translates customer requirements into measurable design targets and drives them from the assembly level down through the subassembly, component, and production process levels.
