POCA, W.Va.-Carbonoks, a manufacturer of mine safety products, will soon ramp up assembly of a new coal mine rescue chamber.
Pending government approval of the device, Carbonoks will begin assembling the Safe Haven rescue chamber at a facility in Poca, providing up to 90 jobs.
A Safe Haven unit travels with miners into the underground mine to provide a shelter in case of an emergency. It moves throughout the mine on skids or on a shuttle car. Up to 16 miners can retreat to the chamber and await rescue. The chamber is made of a unique material that can withstand high heat temperatures, is explosive resistant and is airtight. MORE

The Supreme Court of Canada has overturned a lower court's decision to award a former Honda employee thousands of dollars in punitive damages for being fired without cause.
In a 7-2 decision, the top court on Friday also reduced the amount of severance pay the employee received from 24 months worth of salary to 15 months.
Kevin Keays, who was diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome a decade ago, was fired from a Honda assembly plant in Alliston, Ont., in March 2000, after he missed many days of work. MORE
ROANOKE, VA--An automotive components company is planning to open an assembly plant here, creating 60 jobs. The Westport Corp. will invest $3 million to open the 203,000-square-foot plant, which will assemble axles for the Volvo Heavy Truck plant in Dublin. MORE

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents raided an Arlington aircraft manufacturing plant Thursday and arrested 32 undocumented workers.
Agents executed the search warrant at Aerospace Manufacturing Technologies, Inc., which supplies parts for both commercial and military aircraft, including the Boeing 737 and 777. MORE
