PLEASANTON, CA—A Chinese explosives manufacturer has placed a $1.1 million order with Adept Technology Inc. for its Quattro s650 delta-style robots. Shenzhen King Explorer Science & Technology Co. will use the robots on its automated packaging lines.

DETROIT—Ford Motor Co. plans to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills for each vehicle that it builds by 41 percent as part of a five-year plan through 2016. Ford will reduce the waste generated per vehicle from 22.7 pounds in 2011 to 13.4 pounds.

WASHINGTON—Orders for the factory goods that signal business investment plans jumped last month by the most in more than a year, suggesting companies are confident about their business prospects. Orders for so-called core capital goods, which include industrial machinery, construction equipment and computers, rose 6.3 percent in January from December.
