PHILADELPHIA—The Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia reported healthy gains in manufacturing activity for the region in August. The bank’s index of general business activity increased from 23.9 in July to 28 in August, the fastest growth since March 2011.

PITTSBURGH—Siemens Rail Automation will expand its manufacturing and engineering operations here, in a move that will bring an additional 129 jobs.

SHARON, PA—Noise Solutions, a manufacturer of noise control technology for heavy machinery, has opened a new $4.2 million, 55,000 square foot, assembly plant here  with plans to create 126 jobs over the next three years.

YORK, PA—Harley-Davidson’s motorcycle assembly plant here was named among Industry Week magazine’s “Best Plants” of 2013.
