CHATTANOOGA, TN—Volkswagen of America is going to court to block an order that it negotiate a contract with the UAW for maintenance employees at its assembly plant here. The workers voted to unionize last year.

CHATTANOOGA, TN—VW will appeal to federal court a National Labor Relations Board decision upholding a vote in which a small group of skilled trades workers at the carmaker’s Tennessee assembly plant aligned with the UAW.

CHATTANOOGA, TN—The United Auto Workers union has gained a significant first victory at a foreign-owned automaker in the South. Skilled-trades workers at Volkswagen’s assembly plant here voted 108-44 to have the UAW negotiate their collective bargaining agreements.

WOLFSBURG, Germany—Volkswagen has started rolling out 3D smart glasses as standard equipment at its assembly plant here. Logistics personnel will use the glasses on a voluntary basis for order picking.

CHATTANOOGA, TN—The UAW is seeking a new election at Volkswagen’s assembly plant here, but this time for a smaller unit of employees than in early 2014. A filing with the National Labor Relations Board says that UAW Local 42 will seek an election on Nov. 5 and 6. The election will involve only the 164 full- and part-time maintenance, or skilled trades, employees at the plant.

BERLIN—Volkswagen has for the first time edged past Toyota as the world’s No. 1 automaker during the first half of 2015. VW sold 5.04 million units from January to June, while Toyota’s count during the same period was 5.02 million.

BAUNATAL, Germany—A robot accidentally killed a worker at Volkswagen’s automotive assembly plant here. The robot pressed the worker up against a metal plate, crushing his chest.

CHATTANOOGA, TN—Volkswagen has begun the process of hiring 130 engineers and technicians to staff the automaker’s new R&D center here, which will be fully operational by 2017.

CHATTANOOGA, TN—Volkswagen has recognized a new group called the American Council of Employees (ACE) to represent workers at its assembly plant here, in addition to the United Auto Workers. ACE is an alternative to and has campaigned against the UAW, which a year ago lost an election to be the sole representative of workers at the plant.
