As U.S. furniture manufacturers revamp domestic production after more than a decade of offshoring, they need help implementing state-of-the-art assembly lines. Many of those companies are seeking assistance from the Franklin Furniture Institute at Mississippi State University.
UNION CITY, TN—Ergonomic office chair producer 9to5 Seating is moving its manufacturing operations from China to a new, $39.5 million assembly plant here, bringing 510 jobs to the region.
HIGH POINT, NC—Furniture Brands International has completed the American Home Furnishings Alliance’s environmental management system at all of its domestic facilities, including plants, warehouses and offices. Under the system, facilities must improve management of resources and raw materials, reduce energy and water consumption, and reduce waste disposal and associated costs.
HIGH POINT, NC—U.S. furniture factory orders in April were 11 percent higher from the same month a year ago. The April results brought the year-to-date order increase to 3 percent.
NETTLETON, MS—United Furniture Industries is growing the workforce at its assembly plant here by 25 percent. United, which makes sofas, loveseats and other upholstered furniture, already employs some 400 people.
