New Adhesive Bonding Technology

Adhesives can do more than just bond two parts together. They can conduct electric current—or insulate current. They can transfer heat, keeping assemblies cool. They can keep water, chemicals and dust out of an assembly.
Here’s a look at three new adhesives and a device for curing them.
Adhesive Bonds Tubing for Medical Devices
UV-8675 is an acrylated urethane adhesive for bonding PVC, polycarbonate and other plastics. Designed for bonding PVC tubing in medical devices, it also bonds well to glass and metals. This semirigid polymer offers high bond strength without causing stress cracks. This UV-cure adhesive can be cured in thicknesses from 10 microns to 10 millimeters. It can be used in tight adhesive applications as well as for larger gap filling.
UV-8675 is a low- to medium-viscosity material that can be easily dispensed by hand or pneumatic machine. With a cure time of less than 10 seconds, it produces a tough, high-strength polymer with an elongation of 210 percent and is excellent for temperature cycling from -40 to 85 C.
It is available in 3-, 10- and 30-cc syringes, as well as 8-ounce, 1-liter and 1-gallon containers. The adhesive is nonhazardous for shipping and has a shelf life of one year at room temperature.

Adhesive Bonds Magnets for Electric Motors
Structalit 5859 is a new adhesive developed specifically for magnet bonding. It can be used for magnets to rotors or pole housings.
This one-component epoxy cures at temperatures as low as 100 C. At 150 C, the curing time can be reduced to as little as five minutes. The product has a long open time and can be processed at room temperature for seven days.
Due to its high glass-transition temperature of 143 C, Structalit 5859 has a tensile shear strength of 17 megapascals on steel, even at temperatures of 150 C. In addition, the adhesive is characterized by high impact strength and good elongation at break, which makes it possible to use it with material pairings that have different coefficients of thermal expansion. Other properties include excellent damping; resistance to aggressive media, such as oil or coolant; and good gap bridging to compensate for production-related tolerances.

UV Curing System for High-Speed Coating
VeriCure is a wide-format, water-cooled UV LED curing system for wood coating applications. It features a patented Semiconductor Light Matrix (SLM) array and a unique high-efficiency cooling system, delivering high optical power and energy for high-speed processing. SLM technology provides optimum uniformity across the irradiation area to ensure peak performance and consistent curing quality. With available wavelengths of 365, 395 and 405 nanometers, the VeriCure system offers versatile integration supported by a comprehensive suite of communication protocols.
The high-efficiency UV LED system consumes 60 percent less energy and reduces maintenance and consumable costs compared to conventional systems. An optional secondary glass assembly protects from volatilized compounds, minimizing downtime and repair costs.
The system does not require warm-up time and offers customizable output levels for better energy efficiency and longer LED lifetimes. The device supports conveyor speeds of up to 50 meters per minute.

Adhesive Bonds Plastics With Low Surface Energy
SG400LSE provides strong, reliable bonding on low-surface-energy materials such as polypropylene and polyethylene. The adhesive requires no surface preparation and has low sag, as well as short working and fixture times.
SG400LSE is a two-part translucent, methyl methacrylate adhesive with a 10-to-1 mix ratio. It cross-bonds plastics to metals such as steel and aluminum. The adhesive sets in less than 24 hours, and it bonds well to metal. The adhesive is ideal for bonding large plastic storage tanks, automotive interior fixtures, medical devices, workstations, casework, truck panels, outdoor furniture and signage.
