DETROIT, MI—Originally reported by Reuters, General Motors (GM) is closing its Shenyang plant in northeastern China this month as part of a broader restructuring effort. The facility, officially known as SAIC-GM (Shenyang) Norsom Motors Co., Ltd., manufactures vehicles exclusively for the Chinese market, including the Buick GL8 Legacy minivan and Chevrolet Tracker SUV.
The closure is expected to lead to the discontinuation of the Buick GL8 Legacy, an older model now replaced by the Buick GL8 Century produced at SAIC-GM’s Jinquiao plant in Shanghai. The Chevy Tracker will also likely be phased out in China, aligning with GM’s strategy to focus on premium models under its Buick, Cadillac, and Durant Guild brands.
Initially established in 1992 as a joint venture with Jinbei, the Shenyang plant became part of SAIC-GM in 2004. The closure reflects shifting market dynamics, where domestic Chinese brands—often state-supported—dominate the more affordable vehicle segment. Despite challenges, GM remains committed to China’s market, aiming for financial self-sufficiency and long-term profitability.
