CUPERTINO, CA—The company behind the iPad, iPhone and other popular consumer electronic devices has decided to pull the plug on its electric car project. According to the Reuters news agency, Apple Inc. has stopped working on the much-anticipated vehicle, shifting engineers and resources to artificial intelligence technology initiatives.
At one time, the EV—known internally as Project Titan—was supposed to be launched later this year and assembled by Foxconn. Some experts speculated that the company’s controversial facility in Wisconsin would be used as the production site.
During years of development, Apple applied for a variety of patents on its EV, including advanced driver assistance systems and a nontraditional dashboard design with features inspired by various electronic devices. On the outside, the pillarless vehicle was supposed to feature a glowing apple logo on its distinctive front grill and inverted doors for easy access.
