Volkswagen Installs Metal 3D Printer at Wolfsburg Assembly Plant

WOLFSBURG, Germany—Volkswagen has installed a metal additive manufacturing system at its assembly plant here.
Volkswagen will use the MetalFAB1 system from Additive Industries to 3D-print advanced tooling and spare parts. “We see great potential for 3D metal printing of a broad range of car parts and tooling,” says Klaus-Jürgen Herzberg, works council for Volkswagen.
The MetalFAB1 system is based on powder bed fusion technology. The system integrates multiple lasers, as well as a built-in heat treatment system, automated build plate handling and storage.
